Troubleshooting

Diagnostics, how to reach support, and fixes for the problems people hit most often.

Start here

  • Check Needs attention on Home. It lists download errors, failed release handoffs, failed sync changes, failing release sources, files that need matching, imports to review, and sync conflicts, and each item opens the place to fix it.
  • Quit and reopen Kioku. Several client and maintenance changes only apply at startup.
  • Make sure you are on the latest beta: Settings → Setup and troubleshooting → Updates → Check now.

Save diagnostics

Settings → Setup and troubleshooting → Save diagnostics opens Review diagnostics export. By default the file contains application and runtime versions, your operating system and architecture, summary counts for the database, playback, sync, downloads, feeds, and crashes, the crash-dump folder path, and timings for recent internal workflows. Nothing is uploaded; Save local file writes kioku-diagnostics-YYYY-MM-DD.txt where you choose.

Include sanitized application logs is off every time the dialog opens. Logs may still contain anime titles, filenames, paths, and release names, so review the file before sharing it.

Report a problem

Report a problem in the same section opens Send beta feedback. Pick a category, describe what happened, optionally add a rating, then Review draft shows the exact recipient, subject, and body before Open mail draft hands it to your mail app. No diagnostics or logs are attached automatically; attach the saved diagnostics file yourself if it would help.

You can also write to [email protected] directly. Include your Kioku version and macOS version.

Updates

  • Automatic updates are unavailable in this build. Only the packaged public build checks for updates. Development and local test packages never do.
  • Kioku couldn't check for updates. Check your connection and choose Check now again; updates come from downloads.kioku.moe.
  • An update is ready to install. Choose Restart to update, or quit Kioku; Kioku offers to install a postponed update the next time you quit.

Library

  • No anime found yet. The folder is registered but no episode files were recognised. Add files, then Scan library; check Manage folders for a disabled or unreadable folder.
  • Files need matching. Open Review in the Library header and match them by hand; see Match uncertain files.
  • Library folder watching hit an error. New files may not appear until the next scan. Scan manually and check that the folder is mounted and readable.
  • A title has no cover or episode count. Give it a catalog match from its Details tab.
  • Couldn't play this episode. The file may have moved. Scan the library so Kioku finds the file's new location.

Tracking services

  • AniList rejected this API client, or the same for MyAnimeList. Replace both credentials as a matching pair and check the redirect URL; see If sign-in is rejected.
  • Expired credentials were removed. Reconnect this provider to resume syncing. Reconnect from Settings → Tracking services. Kitsu and MyAnimeList sign-ins can usually be refreshed first with Check service sign-ins; AniList cannot.
  • Sync changes failed or sync conflicts need review on Home. Open the item to retry or resolve; the conflict policy in Tracking services decides the default.
  • Progress is not reaching the service. Confirm the service is the one chosen under Sync with and that Sync local progress to providers is on in Settings → Automation.

Feeds and search

  • Check failed on a feed. Open its status for the reason: check the feed address, your connection, or try again later if the source is not responding correctly.
  • Prowlarr rejected the API key. Copy it again from Prowlarr's Settings → General.
  • Couldn't reach Prowlarr or did not respond in time. Make sure Prowlarr is running, the URL is complete, and Allow private network access is on for a local address.
  • Prowlarr found locally does not appear. Kioku only probes http://127.0.0.1:9696. Enter the real address for Docker, another port, or another host.
  • Kioku could not add and test Nyaa.si. Your Prowlarr may not carry the Nyaa.si template, or the indexer may be unreachable from your network or region. Update Prowlarr, or add another indexer there and connect it instead.
  • A search finds nothing. Search the indexer directly first. A healthy source can simply not have that release; check aliases, season, and episode numbering.
  • Search results are not on the Releases page. Matched results live under the title's Episodes tab; Releases shows RSS arrivals and the review queue.

Downloads

  • Still looking or No sources found yet. With DHT-only discovery some releases never find peers; use Enable Standard discovery on the download or change it in Settings → Automation. Otherwise choose another release.
  • Release link invalid or Release unavailable. Kioku could not read or reach that release; pick another one.
  • Library import needs attention. Use Retry library import or Review library match on the download; for qBittorrent, check the path mapping.
  • Couldn't connect to qBittorrent. See the download client troubleshooting.
  • Restart Kioku to activate the new client. The client is chosen when Kioku starts.

Playback

  • Couldn't start this episode. The file may have moved or the player may be unavailable. Scan the library, then Try again.
  • Playing in MPV · External player fallback. The embedded player is not included or could not start, so Kioku is using a separate MPV window. Full screen is only available with the embedded player. See External MPV fallback.
  • Couldn't play this video from Downloads. The file may have moved or MPV may be unavailable; View install guide opens the MPV installation page.
  • Choose the episode from your library. More than one downloaded episode is ready, so Kioku will not guess which one to play.

Data and backups

  • Library restored from a backup. Kioku could not open the database and restored the newest healthy backup; the original was kept under a new name. See If the database cannot be opened.
  • The selected file is not a supported Kioku backup. Only a healthy Kioku .db backup from this version or older can be restored.
  • A library restore is already scheduled. Restart Kioku to finish it.
  • Cleanup was not applied. The preview expired or the pre-cleanup backup failed; nothing was removed. Preview again.

Questions

  • Is there a Kioku account? No. There is no sign-in and no hosted copy of your library; see the privacy policy.
  • Is there a Windows or Linux version? Not yet. Build targets exist, but no public build is published while the macOS release is being qualified.
  • Is Kioku open source? No. Kioku's source is proprietary. The macOS build ships the notices and licence texts for the third-party media libraries it bundles, and their corresponding source archive is published alongside each release.
  • What does beta mean? Public beta builds follow the beta update channel and may change between releases. Feedback from the app or by email shapes what comes next.
  • Does sync write to every connected service? No. Only the service chosen under Sync with receives changes; the others are read-only previews.
  • What does Kioku send over the network? Only the requests you configure: metadata and sync with the services you connect, the feeds and sources you add, update checks, and the optional aggregate usage counts. The privacy policy lists each one.
